Born in Altmar NY he was largely self-taught exploring simplified areas of flat color applied thinly., seascapes,
drypoints and monotypes.  He continued and developed Matisse's abstracting tendencies and flat color masses, starkness and clarity of images was be seen in works such as Mother and Child (1944) Swimmers and
Sunbathers (1945).  He was greatly admired by Adolph GOTTLIEB, Hofmann and Mark ROTHKO
