Sidney Nolan was born in Melbourne in 1917 and studied at Prahran Technical College and Melbourne's National Gallery School. He was a founding member of Contemporary Art Society, designed sets and costumes for the Ballet Russe and editorially involved with the journal Angry Penguins. He spent much of his life in England and exhibited widely in Australia, Britain and the USA. Major awards included the Dunlop Prize 1950, Italian Government Scholarship 1956, and a Harkness Fellowship 1958-1960. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Australian National University in 1965 and knighted for his services to art in 1981, and in 1983 awarded the highest imperial honour the Order of Merit.
