Lloyd Rees was a painter and draughtsman and was born in Brisbane in 1895 and studied under Godfrey Rivers at the Brisbane Technical College, and the Chelsea Polytechnic in London. In 1917 Sidney Ure-Smith invited him to join Smith and Julius' commercial art studio in Sydney. He had a strong interest in architecture and became Dean of Architecture at Sydney University where he lectured in Art History between 1946 and 1970. Rees held exhibitions with many of Australia's leading galleries, including the Macquarie Galleries in Sydney from 1931-1983. Large retrospectives were mounted by the Art Gallery of NSW and the University of Melbourne. Prizes include a Silver Medal, Paris Exposition 1937, Godfrey Rivers Prize 1941, Wynne Prize 1950, Commonwealth Jubilee Art Prize 1951 and the Dunlop Prize 1954. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Sydney University in 1970 and the CMG in 1977, Companion of the Order of Australia 1985, and Medaille de la Ville de Paris 1987. |
