Highly regarded as one of the foremost exponents of Australian expressionism Withers was born in Staffordshire England on 22 october 1854 arriving in Australia in 1882. Withers joined Roberts, Streeton, McCubbin and Condor at the Eaglemont Camp establishing himself as a member of the Heidelberg School. H estudied at the Royal Academy and South Kensington Schools London, National Gallery School Melbourne, and Academie Julian Paris. Awards received include the Wynne Prize in 1897 and 1900. He died at Eltham Victoria on 13 october 1914.
