Giovanni Bellini

g
Bellini lived in the period when the Venetian Empire was the greatest trading power in the world and Venice
was the crossroad of Europe. He studied with his father, Jacopo (c1400-7) and was influenced by his brother
in law Andrea Mantegna (c1431-1506). Bellini, his father and his elder brother Gentile transformed the art of
Venice to rival Florence and Rome. He was primarily a religious painter and his paintings show a faultless sense
of perspective. As the foremost Teacher of his generation he had great influence on his famous pupils Giorgione,
Titian, and Durer.
