Schubert was born on 31 january 1797 in Vienna, dying at age 31 from typhus.   He is buried near Beethoven. 
His major works include the Trout Piano Quintet of 1819, the  C major symphony of 1825, and the B minor symphony of 1822 which is known as the Unfinished.  
He was known as the greatest exponent of German Lieder and wrote over 600 songs.
