Grimshaw started painting whilst working as a clerk for the Great Northern Railways, his early work was in the Pre-Raphaelite vein and he mainly painted for private patrons, rarely exhibiting his art.

Notable example of his work include:
Iris: Leeds Museums and Galleries
This was the last of Grimshaw's works to be exhibited at the royal Academy.
