The Bassoon is the bass of the woodwind section and also blends in well with all the other instruments. The first bassoons had 3 keys, two for the thumbs and one for the little finger but by the mid 17th century were made in four separate sections, the butt, wing, bass and bell. Pitched in C and made of maple or pearwood, by 1730 a fourth key was added and by 1800 six keys were usual. During the 19th century more improvements were made, Charles-Joseph Sax 1791-1865 introducing covered tone-holes and later with his son Adolphe a 23 keyed metal bassoon. Carl Almenraeder 1786-1843 published a treatise and by 1831 had founded his own factory. By increasing the number of keys to 15 he was able to extend the bassoon's range to nearly 4 octaves. Johann Heckel 1812-1877 and successive members of the Heckel family carried out many reforms over the years, launching in 1870 a famous model. Buffet-Crampon makes a bassoon in rosewood.
Notable works with Bassoon include:
Mozart Bassoon Concerto in Bb K191
Concertos of Hummel and Weber
the opening of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring
