The Harpsichord sounds when a key is pressed and the jack plucks the string. As the jack returns a felt damper dampens the string. Several jacks can be connected to each key, and more than one string to each note which results in different sounds: add more strings and the sound is increased, the string always being plucked in the same way. A lute or harp stop can give a different sound, leather or delrin (plastic) jacks alter the sound produced as well. Peau de Buffe (Buffalo hide leather ) produces yet another "color".
