Oboe - french - hautbois was being played in 1670 in Paris, later
in other European cities. The first oboes had 2 keys and were
played in the band of Louis X1V. In 1695 the first printed tutor
for the two keyed oboe was published, Henry Purcell used oboes
in his larger works and the Horse Grenadiers adopted them in 1678.
By the early 18th century almost every European band
and orchestra included a pair of oboes. During the 19th
century the number of keys was increased and French makers began
to develop the instrument. Frederic Treibert 1813-1878 was the
most celebrated of the French oboe makers, he narrowed the instrument's
bore which resulted in a more refined tone. Triebert introduced
both the thumb-plate and conservatoire systems. Today at least
four systems of keywork are in use.
Notable works for oboe include:
concertos by Vivaldi and albinoni
Mozart Oboe Concerto in C K314
Concertos by Richard Strauss, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Gustav
Holst
