THE WORLD's GREAT PHOTOGRAPHERS
French photographer Cartier-Bresson's
was born on august 22 1908 in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France and was one of the
first photographers to use the smaller 35mm format. He developed the
street photography style that influenced later generations of photographers -
his work has come to be regarded
as one of the seminal visions of the 20th century.
He studied painting for many years and then began to photograph
with a Leica around 1930.
Commissions from Harper's Bazaar and Vu in 1932
started Cartier-Bresson in photojournalism. He also studied film
technique working with Strand in the US and Jean Renoir in France.
His many travels in Europe, Asia and the Americas resulted in
scores of magazine articles and more than a dozen books. His photographs
were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1946 and
1948. A major retrospective was held at the Musee d'Art Modern
in Paris in 1980
He died on august 3, 2004 in Cereste France.
