Born in Massachusetts he studied at the Phillips Academy taking art classes with Patrick Morgan, and later at
 Princeton University art history with William C Seitz and painting with Stephen Green. He began making paintings of narrow stripes of black paint, subsequently using stripes of metallic paint and colored stripes.
