The major precursor to the shift from Art
Nouveau towards this new modern style was the Scottish architect
and designer
Charles Rennie Mackintosh
1868-1928
whose first works had elements of Art Nouveau but he then began
to favor a more stark elegant and geometrically inspired style.
Art Nouveau was primarily a decorative style whose favorite pattern
was the whiplash line and took its name from the Parisien shop
opened by the entrepreneur Siegfied Bing in 1895. Called Jugendstil
(youth style) in Germany and Austria, Stile Liberty (after
the London Store Liberty) in Italy, and Modernista in Spain./
