Realism
shocked critics and public, subjects were humble citizens instead
of mythical heroes, paintings reflected the artists concern for
ordinary people for whom the Industrial Revolution had caused
job loses and poor working conditions for those lucky enough to
find work. Artists became interested in outdoor painting, scenes
depicting different weather conditions and the light at different
times of the day. Realism
lasted from the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874 to the
last in 1886 - some Impressionists artists also reach back to
the Realists and some forward to the Post Impressionists
Gustave COUBET's The Artists Studio is considered the most important
work of this period
