Early in his life Uccello was an apprentice to the Sculptor Ghiberti, later working in Venice as a mosaicist in
Venice producing frescos. His art combines the decorative, elaborate Gothic style with early Renaissance perspective.

Uccello was commissioned by Piero de'Medici to paint the 3 huge panels depicting
the Battle of San Romano.
They were for the large hall of the Medici Palace which
was being built by Michelozzo a leading Florentine architect.
