One of the major artists of the Renaissance, along with Michelangelo and Raphael Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 in Tuscany. Apprenticed to the sculptor del Verrocchio (c1435-1488) and worked from 1482 in the court of Milan. The ruling family of Florence, the Medici ignored his entirely. He pioneered a new artistic technique called sfumato - which gave the appearance of small changes in graduation of light so outlines took on a softened appearance. His Mona Lisa, one of the most famous paintings in the history of
Western art typifies this style of painting.
